An Equinox is when the length of day and night on Earth is equal. We have two in a year – Autumn & Spring.
They are different that Solstices which celebrate the longest day of the year in Summer and shortest day of the year in Winter.
At the time of writing this, we witness the Autumn Equinox.
On the surface, the comings and goings of the Equinoxes and Solstices may seem mildly amusing for a few seconds, but then we are tempted back to our realities.
There may be very little reason to care about length of day and night. We have electricity after-all, do we really care when the sun sets and rises?
Indeed, some of us do.
I believe it is about (re)connection.
This isn’t the USBC-style connection of our devices.
But, connecting to this thing that has been a constant for thousands of years across every tribe and civilization – the dance of the sun and moon, as viewed from the Earth.
The cool thing is that there is something for everyone on his day!
There’s the beauty of inviting and allowing the balance of day and night in its emotional and spiritual meaning to merge with us and unfurl inner Self to us.
There’s the full-on geek-love of math, physics and architecture in the exploration of formidable mystical structures from the past were built aligning to the geometry of the Equinoxes and Solstices – the Stonehenge, the Sphinx, Machu Picchu and so many others.
There’s the start of harvest season if you’re a gardener of farmer; or simply someone who visits your local farmers’ market. Depending on your culture and heritage, there may be holidays and festivals around this time.
Then there’s a the ritual aspect for those who follow mystical traditions.
In some parts of the world, you may be wrapping up your fiscal year, which would involve a look back at the business year you’ve had.
Maybe it’s just a good time to rest, reflect because it is the time of balance on Earth (at least as far as the Sun and Moon are concerned).
So, whatever and however you choose to connect, or re-connect with yourself, with your centre – this is a good time for that! It is also a great time to reconnect with nature, with love, with family and community, if that is available to you.
Maybe, all you want to do is re-align and pivot your intentions, or it’s a good excuse to grab a friend and watch the sun-set.
Re-connection is important, because it often gives us the necessary reminder that things much larger and ineffable are always at play. That we are part of world, a universe and a relationship of which we see very small part; and we understand even less. And through all this, we walk in our world in these brilliant mortal bodies, with infinite immortal spirits, getting to experience cosmic balance.
Happy Autumn Equinox and warmest wishes for whatever it means to you!
